New Kuwaiti Student Organizations Elect Leaders, Begin Strategic Planning

As part of a MEPI-funded project designed to contribute concrete opportunities for youth to experience civic activism and democratic processes, the Kuwait Environmental Protection Society (KEPS) has helped students establish two new environmental clubs at Kuwait University and the Public Authority for Applied Education and Training (PAAET).  These clubs are made up of students who are not just interested in the environment, but also want to take democratic action to improve environmental protection in Kuwait.

The clubs took important steps last month as they elected their student leaders, and participated in training on strategic planning for their clubs’ mission and operations.  The training was led by Kevin Kesckes, Director of Community-University Partnerships at Portland State University. Students examined and discussed issues related to leading and managing a student organization; establishing operational rules and bi-laws; electing leadership and establish committees; recruiting members and organizing activities; and raising and managing funds.

The students interactively explored concepts of service learning and civic engagement, established action committees, and began planning for the clubs’ upcoming advocacy activities.  Students confirmed that they gained considerable self-confidence; including in their ability to take action, democratically engage, effectively plan, and think creatively through interactive participation.

Dr. Meshal Al Meshan, Director of KEPS stated, “Students showed significant pride and ownership of their clubs and the project.  It has started to initiate a lot of enthusiasm among the students to engage on public environmental issues and actively participate in affecting change.”
