    MEPI Partners with Yemeni Civil Society to Address Child Marriage

    In Yemen, it is reported that a quarter of all females marry before the age of 15. When a 13-year-old Yemeni bride died in April 2010 due to injuries from marital relations, another child bride death in a series of recent cases, Yemeni human rights activists and civil society organizations (CSOs) increasingly advocated against child marriage and in support of legislation to ban the practice.

    In Qatar, much of the vast population of foreign workers encounters labor practices and conditions that are not in accordance with international standards. However, foreign workers themselves have little recourse for improving their conditions, and the Qatari public is largely unaware or unconcerned with labor conditions that may contravene Qatari law or international standards.

    UAE Women Learn their Rights

    Recent studies indicate that Emirati women's legal cases are on the rise. The increasing divorce rate in the UAE demands that women know their rights and the rights of their children. Also, the UAE government is on a well-publicized “Emiratization” of the workforce campaign in both the government and private sectors. This has resulted in more Emirati women entering the workforce and a need for them to be aware of labor rights and laws.

    MEPI-funded Rule of Law Initiative Trains UAE Judges on Victims’ Rights

    In collaboration with the United Arab Emirates Ministry of Justice, MEPI program implementer, the American Bar Association (ABA) Rule of Law Initiative provided training in January 2011 for more than 30 judges and prosecutors on victims’ rights and the collection and preservation of evidence. The ABA-organized international panel of experts spent two days with officials in Dubai addressing both topics.

    MEPI Local Grant Launches Campaign to Raise Women’s Legal Awareness in Oman

    Due to a recognized lack of awareness on legal issues among women in Oman, the Seeb Chapter of the Oman Women’s Association organized a set of activities to provide both the necessary legal knowledge to Omani women working in the public and private sectors, as well as to create public awareness on women’s legal rights among Omanis.

    MEPI-Sponsored Documentary on Family Law Reform Premieres in Bahrain

    The Kingdom of Bahrain relies on Sharia law with regards to marriage, divorce, child custody, and inheritance issues, often grouped as the category of “family law.” The family law reform agenda, and development of personal status law, is often sidelined as a result of opposition from both Shi'a and Sunni leaders due to the misconception that such reforms would undermine religious values.

    Maktaba MEPI features more than 400 training resources that some 40 partner organizations in the U.S. and the Middle East have developed with MEPI funding. The site includes materials in English, Arabic and French.
